Fine Tooning Cover

Our Fine Tooning graduate art book's cover image. Designed by yours truly and this fantastic fellow.

The focal image was drawn by me while Dave did everything behind it. Lots of helpful input between us and from people passing by our workstation. Thanks everyone!

Some Scenes

I felt like posting something new. Here's some scenes I'm nearly done tweaking.

Life Drawing Midterm

We drew Jafar in life drawing class.

Unfortunately the real Jafar was unavailable. Instead we had to practice drawing him beforehand and picture the model with his crazy proportions (with the aid of the model's pretty neat costume).

I like how the face turned out on this one.

This was a gesture sequence. The model continuously acted out a scene (in this case trying to run for a bus and missing it) and we had to pick out important "story-telling" poses. Each was about a 3 min drawing.

These were all drawn on 24" x 36" sheets of newsprint.

Business Card

It's been a relatively long time since my last post, hm?
I present my business card design. I'll do a test print tomorrow.

And the back will look something like this:

Scene 8 Nearly Complete

It's almost there. Need to colour the car, adjust the O/L, add an effect and a shadow.

Oh, maybe it's not almost done. But it's progress!

The leap

I cleaned and coloured this today. Obviously the BG is still incomplete.

She's over 9000

A quick animation I slapped together for my friend Kat's birthday.

It combines Dragonball Z, iguanas and sushi. Unfortunately I didn't have time to add any sound in.

Also, check it out! I'm uploading from Vimeo now.

Happy Valentine's Day Everybody

This is a craft I made for a special someone who's into steampunk. I'm fairly proud with how looks despite my scant knowledge of producing the style.

Here's an alternate perspective.

Unfortunately it has no purpose or function beyond aesthetics. Maybe next time I'll try to add some mechanics to my crafting.

Ingredients used:
  • Wooden craft hearts
  • Bronze, copper and black paint
  • Gears and chain purchased from a craft store
  • Some doodads purchased from a hardware store
  • Knickknacks found around the house
  • Love
  • Glue

Here's Gomez

This was our Introduction-to-Flash assignment, involving some simple head movement and lip sync. I found it funny that we were animating floating heads so I created a BG a head would feel comfortable on.

Punk Rocker Robos...

....was the theme of this week! Maybe I'll post my zombie one soon.

DSi Doodle Animations 2

Here's a DSi doodle animation of my friend Kat playing with my friend Katie's Cat. That came out sounding a bit redundant...

And naturally you can't have one without the other, so here's her boyfriend Ryan burping like no one else can. Ryan's a pretty swell guy.

Things are gonna happen to him.

This assignment was done in Flash. We were given the audio clip and a character to animate along to it. The ending wasn't part of the assignment; it was a bonus I added.

Animals!

Today we took a field trip to the Agricultural Museum! Here are the highlights.

These fluffy goats were tons of fun to draw.

Whups, forgot to finish the front legs on this ram.

 More of that ram.

 Another goat.

I like how this pig turned out.

And this feasting cow.

Rough Decapus Tests

Some early-in-production scenes from my film. Keep in mind these are only animation keys, meaning the action will be smooth when I'm finished with it.

Gorgeous

There was a brief trend during which my class drew their film characters in poofy princess dresses. This was a fairly quick drawing.

Wendy's Box

Here's an assignment from over a year ago. We had to have Wendy walk on screen with one emotion, notice the box, react to its contents with a contrasting emotion and run off. After completing this assignment I felt I had finally begun to grasp this animation thing.

Wipe and Erase

This was a one hour long pose done in life drawing class. I used a technique we recently learned called wipe and erase, where you begin with a mid-tone (smeared conte) and repeatedly alternate between drawing and erasing until you have a nice balance. The left foot looks small to me here but I think it's the way the paper was rolled during the photo.

Done on a 24" x 36" sheet of newsprint.

Flight of the Steve

My DSi came pre-installed with a handy little animation app called Flipnote Studio. DSs are easy to carry around and the screens are small so I don't get too carried away animating. Here's a little looping animation of my friend Steve flying through the sky.

Note: Steve doesn't actually smoke. I made that part up.

Sidestep Assignment

Here's a simple animation done in digital class, using Toon Boom Harmony. We were given 3 views of the character to manipulate into doing a sidestep.

Film Character Turnarounds

A turnaround for my third year independent film character. For my own visual reference.

Also, the coloured version.

I should have some animation tests to post soonish.

Dog Walk Animation

Here's my dog walk from the first semester of third year. It features Kaltag from the animated film Balto.

Dog Studies

From when we drew dog skeletons (plastic) in life drawing. The next part was adding muscles.

Drawn on top on a sheet of tracing paper using coloured pencil.

Here's the whole shebang.

I'll see if I can figure out how to upload my dog walk animation...

Old Stuff

The following is a comic page written and photographed by my buddies and me in Pre-Animation at Algonquin.

It was heavily Monty Python inspired. (BTW, I'm the fellow on the left)

Featured in the comic is my fantastic pal Rebbecca David. Some time ago I envisioned her as a crab. Here's a link to her blog!

A Caricature

Caricature of filmmaker Michael Moore, done for design class at the end of second year. I'll render him in my spare time perhaps.

Secret Santa Painting

Our year did a Secret Santa where we had to pull a name and draw that person a picture. Hey, I never got mine.

)=<

I used acrylic paint on an 8" x 10" canvas.

Suburban Laboratory

An establishing shot.

And a quick blue tonal test for an interior BG.

Dr. Calamar E. Decapus

Time for an older piece:

My first design for Decapus and Chum. I really can't look at it anymore. When I decided to make a film with these two I knew I'd need to make lots of revisions. Here are a couple pages I found:

Here he still has the box head but loses the gloves. I thought the mantle would be too annoying to animate.

But I added it and it stuck.

And here he is.

Late Introduction

My name is Scott Lewis. I'm Canadian and midway through my final year of Animation at Algonquin College. This year we've been given the exciting chance to create our own independent films. Mine stars Dr. Decapus, squid mad scientist, and his assistant Chum the fish head.

I'll post more about my film in the coming weeks.

For Julien

Happy Birthday! Even though it was a month and a half ago.

I'll colour it properly when I have some time.

Friday, January 14, 2011

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog! I don't feel like typing an introduction yet but here's some art:

Painted in Acrylic on a sheet of canvas pad. I forget the size. Given to my friend Dave (featured in the painting) for his birthday. He's supposed to resemble a character from Super Smash Bros. he uses a lot. I hadn't used paint in years so this was very fun.

Edit: This isn't a ranting sort of blog but I need to vent. Websites that forcibly and unexpectedly play music are the most annoying things I can currently imagine. It's quite late and I wasn't expecting music to blast from my speakers. And I doubt the sleeping people were either.
